Walking Ancient Streets with Apostle Paul: A Journey Through Perge

Perge Ancient City

Perge ancient city, located 15 kilometers east of Antalya (ancient Attalia), is one of the most significant sites on our Biblical tours in Turkey. As the former capital of Pamphylia, Perge stood as a cultural and religious center during the Roman period. The city is especially notable for its connection to St. Paul’s missionary journeys and the worship of Artemis Pergaia.

Perge is a part of our Biblical Turkey Tours. You can explore our tours here.

The Religious and Cultural Grandeur of Perge

Visitors today can witness well-preserved structures, including:

  • A large Roman theatre
  • Stadium and gymnasium
  • Roman baths, necropolis, and agora
  • Hellenistic gates and column-lined avenues

Perge was known for its festivals held in honor of Artemis, much like those in Ephesus. The city’s extensive ruins let us imagine ancient urban life in the times of early Christianity.

St. Paul’s Visits to Perge

St. Paul’s Visits to Perge

According to the Book of Acts, Apostle Paul first arrived in Perge in 46 AD, accompanied by Barnabas and John Mark (Acts 13:13). Though they stayed briefly at first, this visit marked a crucial moment when John Mark returned to Jerusalem, causing later friction between Paul and Barnabas.

On their return from Pisidian Antioch, Paul and Barnabas preached in Perge (Acts 14:25), before sailing from Attalia to Antioch. These visits embed Perge in the geography of the New Testament.

Modern Pilgrimage: The St. Paul Trail

Today, pilgrims and travelers can follow the St. Paul Trail, a hiking route that connects Perge with other Biblical locations like Pisidia. Walking through these ancient ruins offers a spiritual connection for those tracing the path of the Gospel’s spread through Asia Minor.

Tips for Visiting Perge Today

If you're planning a visit in summer, keep in mind:

  • Early morning or late afternoon visits are recommended.
  • Bring water, sunscreen and a hat.
  • Expect warm and humid weather typical of Antalya.

Exploring Perge allows visitors to walk the same paths as Apostle Paul — a unique and humbling experience.
